Abstract: After a brief biographical introduction, a succinct timeline of the construction of the Church of Saint Francis of Pampulha in Belo Horizonte and the ecclesiastical implications shall be here presented. Through clerical reactions, one can observe how broke down the expectations created by the catholic environment of the time became. Therefore, a formal analysis of the paintings, highlighting the death of Christ on the cross, aims at unveiling the meaning of the most significant iconic symbols of this episode. The interpretation here depicted shows Portinari’s art as a form of expressionism that tends to abstraction. “The disfiguration of Christ” in the XX century painting and its abstract religious meaning is emphasised by the usage of the contributions of Michel Henry’s, Jean-Jacques Wunenburger’s and Paul Tillicch’s theories. In short, a new rupture in expectations by the comparison of Portinari’s work with the traditional portrait of the via crucis will be shown.
